Maybe you are such a player and you find yourself chasing a flush when you really shouldn’t. Knowing when to play a suit and when not is really simple enough without getting too many pot odds. The basic problem with playing a matched hi-lo is that you’ll be placing more high cards than you would on your flush. For many players, this is a hand that is difficult to avoid when the high pair is hitting.

For example, you are in the middle position with spades K-3. You have limped and there are still 3 other players in the hand including the blinds. The flop came rainbow KT-5.

There’s no flush possibility here, but you’ve hit a high pair. That’s the good news. The bad news is that you have a bad kicker. You’ve been hit with hands like AK, KQ, KJ, etc. All of these hands are very likely to be hands your opponent can play. If you bet this hand and it is called or raised, you have to let it go because you don’t have a strong kicker. For too many players, this is impossible to do and they end up losing their chip stack because of it. The better option is to stay away from these kinds of situations, unless there is a compelling reason to play a position such as hands, points in tournaments, chip stack size. (big or small)

With these things in mind, I’d be inclined to play a suit that goes up to 8-7, but not lower unless there’s a very good reason to do so. I also recommend limping with a matching card. Often times, in most games, you don’t want to put a large number of chips into a flush draw. Because of this, there may be times in certain situations where to play these hands strongly is to suggest that you are playing an Ace or a high pair just to throw your opponent off balance, but you must have a good understanding of the table that you are. in to make this assessment.
